Blood Clots

Q: I have three nephews who have Factor V Leiden.  Factor V Leiden is the presence of a particular gene that is passed on from your parents. Factor V Leiden is a variant of the protein Factor V (5), which is needed for blood clotting. People who have a Factor V deficiency are more likely to bleed badly while people with Factor V Leiden have blood that has an increased tendency to clot. People carrying the Factor V Leiden gene have a five times greater risk of developing a blood clot (thrombosis) than the rest of the population. However, many people with the gene will never suffer from blood clots. In Britain, 5 per cent of the population carry one or more genes for Factor V Leiden, which is far more than the number of people who will actually suffer from thrombosis. What supplements can you recommend for someone with this condition? A:  For someone suffering from Factor V Leiden, I would suggest our Beyond Health Ultimate Welness Kit, Garlic, and Linden Mistletoe for the bloo…

Natural Therapies for High Blood Pressure

Natural Therapies for High Blood Pressure

. . .  drugs just aren't cutting it. The poor drug industry has been hard put to come up with a drug for hypertension that doesn't significantly reduce quality of life with side effects like dizziness, nausea, arrhythmias and sexual problems, and in addition contribute over time to chronic disease. The new angiotensin receptor blockers were recently linked in The Lancet Oncology with developing prostate, breast and lung cancers. It's also been hard for them to come up with drugs that do the job. In a 2008 Canadian Family Physician, Richard Nahas, MD, CCFP, says only about 1/3 of those taking hypertension meds achieve optimal blood pressure control. Therefore it's not surprising, although refreshing, to see some serious attention being paid in medical journals to non-drug therapies. Recently, in The Journal of Clinical Hypertension, two MDs discussed the value of the low-sodium DASH diet (see my article on the DASH diet for a description), exercise, weight reduction, moderate a…

Aged Garlic Extract (AGE) for your Heart and Mind

. . .  a unique garlic supplement higher in antioxidants than fresh, raw garlic If you have heart disease, or are worried about developing heart disease, there are a number of factors you may be monitoring: cholesterol and triglycerides, blood pressure, and abnormal blood clotting. Did you know that AGE has been shown to have a powerful positive impact on each of these factors? If your doctor takes a more sophisticated approach, you may also be looking at inflammation, heavy metal chelation, stress levels, homocysteine, lipoprotein (a), and oxidative stress. AGE has also been shown to powerfully impact all of these factors as well! Many of these same factors are also risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, and play a role in age-related cognitive decline (memory problems and slowed thinking). AGE is a unique garlic supplement developed and sold by Kyolic, a division of Wakunaga Pharmaceutical Company in Japan. It is produced by extraction and…

Don’t Get That Cold or Flu!

Don’t Get That Cold or Flu!

It’s flu season again, but you don’t need to get caught by a cold or the flu. The truth is, healthy people don’t get colds. Many people in traditional healthy cultures live well past a hundred without getting a single cold. Here’s what you need to do: Build your immunity daily with the Beyond Health Wellness Kit appropriate for you (call our office at 800-250-3063 if you don’t know which one to take), 8-10 glasses of pure water, exercise that produces a sweat (and/or take regular saunas), and a good, sugar-free, alkalinizing diet. Get your vitamin D levels tested; if they aren’t in the high-normal range, include 1-2 capsules of Beyond Health vitamin D3 in your daily supplement program and retest every 3 months until they are. Minimize stress, avoid allergens (they tax the immune system), and try to get a good night’s sleep every night. This should keep your immunity in tip-top shape—ready to throw off any viruses that come its way. However, because life isn’t perfect, and neit…

A Plant-Based Thanksgiving

A Plant-Based Thanksgiving

What is a plant-based diet? There are different interpretations, but except for the vegan diet, which is exclusively plant, most plant-food diets are centered on plant foods, especially vegetables, using only small amounts of animal products as “condiments.” At Beyond Health, we recommend limiting animal proteins to 2-3 ounces a day, and not every day. Although on Thanksgiving, we enjoy organic turkey, we don’t overdo it. Instead, we make a feast of a beautiful salad with our delicious Beyond Health Olive Oil and Beyond Health Balsamic Vinegar and several favorite vegetable dishes. We then have a little turkey on the side. Here are two treasured vegetable recipes from our friend Bette Acuff, visual artist and artist-of-life, who brings beauty, balance and taste to all of her endeavors. CREAMY CAULIFLOWER SOUP WITH GREENS  1 tablespoon Beyond Health Olive Oil, plus more for drizzling 1 medium onion, chopped (about 1 cup) 4 cloves of garlic, chopped Selina…

Probiotics—Key to a Strong Immune System

Probiotics—Key to a Strong Immune System

We each have a mighty force of trillions of tiny microorganisms—helpful bacteria and other microbes—living on our skin, in our digestive system, and in tissues throughout the body, that is constantly on guard to defend us against potentially invasive infectious disease-causing pathogens like viruses, yeasts, parasites and harmful bacteria. Discounted for many years by the medical establishment, scientists are now beginning to discover how much we depend on these “good bugs.” Not only do they synthesize vitamins and amino acids and help us to digest and absorb our food, they are also an indispensable part of our immune system. Before a pathogen—bacterial, viral, or fungal—can get into your bloodstream, where it can replicate and become increasingly virulent, it must first get past the formidable fortress created by your skin and mucus membranes. The skin isn’t just a physical barrier; it is an immune system organ, where immune cells and good bugs work together to conquer pot…
