Glyphosate Update

On December 23, 2020, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation banning the use of glyphosate on public lands throughout the state of New York. It’s the first state to enact such a ban and one more chink in the armor protecting chemical giant Monsanto, one of the world’s most reviled corporations, in its bid to continue poisoning the world with glyphosate!

Another chink: Earlier in 2020, German chemical company Bayer, who recently bought Monsanto, agreed to settle tens of thousands of cancer claims linked to glyphosate for $10.9 billion.

What is glyphosate? It’s the active ingredient in Monsanto’s herbicide Roundup, and it will kill any plant in its path except those plants genetically engineered by Monsanto to be “Roundup Ready.” An acknowledged carcinogen and endocrine disruptor, glyphosate has also been shown to kill good gut bacteria while favoring yeast and pathogens, and to interfere with the body’s detoxification system.

Scientist Stephanie Seneff, who has focused on glyphosate for the past decade, says that the chemical bioaccumulates in the body, especially in our bone marrow; that it binds with minerals, causing deficiencies and, with heavy metals like aluminum, mercury, lead and arsenic, leading to toxicities; disrupts sulfur metabolism; replaces the amino acid glycine in enzymes, and hence greatly interferes with protein digestion; and is implicated in leaky gut, gluten intolerance, celiac disease, autism and kidney disease.

Unfortunately, glyphosate has become ubiquitous. Although you may scrupulously avoid GMO foods (glyphosate is currently used on GE corn, soy, cotton, canola, sugar beets, and alfalfa used for animal feed), you probably have some glyphosate in your body right now.

Glyphosate gets into the air we breathe, the water we drink, and even the organic food we eat. Seneff warns that glyphosate is often sprayed on non-GMO crops like wheat, sugar cane, lentils, peas and beans just before the harvest. It kills them intentionally, making them easier to harvest.

According to Seneff, when Europeans were urine tested, about half had glyphosate in their systems. In much of Europe, glyphosate has been banned, but here, she believes, it would be closer to 100%. (The Europeans who had less glyphosate also had less chronic disease; those who ate organic had less glyphosate in their urine.)

Glyphosate gets into the root system of plants, so you can’t wash it off. When you eat one of these plants the glyphosate winds up in your gut. Until we can get rid of this dangerous chemical, you can avoid GMOs and glyphosate by choosing foods that are certified organic or are Non-GMO Project Verified (the label with the monarch butterfly). Certified organic animal proteins must come from animals fed a non-GMO diet.

Seneff also advises that the bacteria acetobacter is one of the few microbes that can fully break down glyphosate for excretion. Acetobacter is found in Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar, and in fermented foods like raw sauerkraut and kefir.
