Serotonin, Fish Oil and Your Brain

Omega-3s, Mood, and the Biochemistry of Depression Several years ago, Spanish researchers followed more than 12,000 European university graduates over a period of 6½ years, tracking diet and mental health outcomes. Their findings were striking: Diets high in trans fats increased depression risk by 50% Diets rich in fish oil were associated with a significantly lower risk of depression This wasn’t a subtle effect—and it points directly to the biochemical role of dietary fats in mental health. Why Omega-3 Deficiency Affects Mood Fish oil is a concentrated source of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly: EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) Deficiency in omega-3s has been linked to: Reduced stress resilience Increased anxiety and depression Hostility and aggression Impaired emotional regulation In one randomized controlled trial, medical students who supplemented with EPA/DHA experienced a 20% reduction in anxiety—despite being…

Beyond Health ― Our Story ― The Company

Raymond Francis' expertise in supplements developed on two levels. As a chemist, he networked with leaders in the industry and began to understand how a good supplement should be made. On another level, he was his own guinea pig, learning by trial and error. He was extremely chemically sensitive at the time, and poorly formulated supplements could have devastating effects, causing health setbacks lasting days and weeks at a time. He knew that although he was an extreme example, such supplements could have subtle negative effects on anyone. Lesson number one became crystal clear: supplements made with cheap, synthetic chemicals, with low biological activity in the body were the most expensive supplements anyone could buy! Not only were they only marginally effective for their intended use; their unintended and harmful side effects on body chemistry made them worse than worthless. The only supplements capable of helping people get well and stay well were made from natural ingredient…

The Other “Silent Killer” Disease

High blood pressure is known as a silent killer. You can have it for years without getting any symptoms until you experience a fatal heart attack. But there is another silent killer: kidney disease. Given the many priorities already on your plate, you probably haven’t given much thought to your kidneys. But since March 10 has been named World Kidney Day (and March, National Kidney Month), we’d like to draw your attention to kidney health if only for a couple of minutes. According to the National Kidney Foundation (NKF), more than 26 million Americans have kidney disease, and most of them don’t know it. By the time you experience clear symptoms, your kidneys may already be shot necessitating dialysis for the rest of your life . . . which may not be that long. Kidney disease is the 9th leading cause of death in the US. Even before symptoms of kidney disease are evident, the disease significantly raises your risk of heart attack, stroke, osteoporosis and anemia. A simple urine or…

A Natural Approach to Alleviating Pain

A Natural Approach to Alleviating Pain

Drugs reduce pain by poisoning enzymes or blocking pain receptors in the body, but they do nothing to address its cause(s). In fact, drugs usually make the underlying situation worse and create additional undesirable outcomes called “side effects.” A holistic approach uses natural pain suppressants with only beneficial effects on the body while it mobilizes and supports the body to heal itself of underlying causes. Structural issues should be treated with physical therapy and other types of bodywork. But tissue injury and inflammation causing pain are best addressed with healthy lifestyle, excellent overall nutrition, and specific nutrients that stimulate the body’s own repair mechanisms, reduce inflammation and build tissue integrity. Numerous studies show that vitamin C and the bioflavonoid quercetin do all three, creating a powerful intervention when used together. For maximum benefit, use our uniquely pure and potent vitamin C and our quercetin fortified with additional tiss…

You May Be Eating More Sugar Than You Think

You May Be Eating More Sugar Than You Think

Nutrition experts at Tufts University say the average American consumes about 30 teaspoons of “added sugar” (that is, sugar not found naturally in food) a day. That’s a heck of a lot if you believe, as we do, that refined sugar and high fructose corn syrup are deadly metabolic poisons, and just 2 teaspoons of them throws your body into biochemical chaos for several hours. Or that honey and other natural sweeteners aren’t a whole lot better and should be used sparingly. Although the sugar industry keeps trying to convince the government and consumers that any form of sugar is safe in any amount, they’re fighting a losing battle. The science saying otherwise has become so overwhelming that even the conservative American Heart Association now agrees that added sugar is implicated in obesity, high blood pressure and other risk factors for heart disease and stroke. They recommend no more than 6 teaspoons of sugar per day for women and 9 for men. Last year, government Dietary Guidelin…

Alzheimer’s: Preventable and Reversible

After decades and billions of dollars spent on Alzheimer’s research with nothing much to show for it in the way of effective prevention or treatment, a UCLA researcher has broken through to produce some amazing results with a game-changing treatment program. And, wouldn’t you know it, his program has a lot in common with the Beyond Health Lifestyle! Dale E. Bredeson MD, Director of Neurodegenerative Disease Research at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and Founding President/CEO of the Buck Institute for Age Research in Novato, CA, had studied Alzheimer’s for years. He saw that although many individual lifestyle factors, herbs and supplements led to minor improvements, a more comprehensive approach was needed. His program, called MEND (Metabolic Enhancement for NeuroDegeneration), is an individualized approach covering 36 different factors that can be involved in developing cognitive impairment and ultimately Alzheimer’s. The great news is that this approach halted a…

Sitting Kills; Moving Heals

Sitting Kills; Moving Heals

Sitting Kills, Moving Heals is the title of a book by exercise physiologist Dr. Joan Vernikos. Her argument—one that has been confirmed by other scientists in a new field called “inactivity physiology” is not that sitting is necessarily bad for us; just that we spend far too much time doing it. The real problem is inactivity. Or put another way, it’s the absence of moving against gravity in a variety of ways throughout the day. Moving in opposition to gravity stimulates certain cell functions we need to be healthy, and we need to move frequently throughout the day. An hour at the gym after work won’t cut it. Dr. Vernikos became an expert on the physiological effects of gravity while working with NASA, where she observed the health-damaging effects of weightlessness on astronauts. Living in a gravity-free environment, she says, accelerates the aging process by about ten times. Changes in muscle and bone and other detrimental physiological changes that ordinarily occur in one ye…

Are You Deficient in Magnesium?

It’s Heart Month at Beyond Health. We recently wrote about magnesium and the heart—that magnesium is essential for a healthy heart, and that magnesium deficiency is often the real cause of cardiovascular problems such as high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, and even heart attacks. Unfortunately magnesium deficiency is epidemic today! It has been estimated that 3/4 of the US population doesn’t consume the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for magnesium. So 75% of us may not even be getting enough magnesium in our diets to prevent severe deficiency disease, let alone achieve optimal health. But add to that the many factors that prevent full utilization of the magnesium we consume (see article below) and you’ve got a real problem that affects almost everyone. But how can you tell if you’re deficient? The blood test most doctors will give you won’t tell you very much.  The body does everything it can to keep blood levels consistent, and will keep pulling magnesium out…

Can Taking Showers Cause Cancer? Find Out Here!

Can Taking Showers Cause Cancer? Find Out Here!

Taking showers can cause cancer! Twenty years ago the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) placed hot showers on their list of cancer sources. The main culprit was chlorine. Chlorine is a poisonous chemical, a bleaching agent. Sure, it does a great job of killing living things in our water, like bacteria and viruses. The problem is we’re living things too. Chlorine gas was used as a deadly weapon during World War I! Chlorine is a pro-oxidant that causes free radical damage in the body, a major factor in aging and in every kind of disease. Chlorine and its by-products have been linked with various forms of cancer, neurological issues, reproductive problems, heart disease (including atherosclerosis and hypertension), decreased immunity, allergies, hypothyroidism and lung problems. When you smell chlorine in your shower, it’s because it’s escaping into the air as chlorine gas. Since showers are usually poorly ventilated, chlorine gas concentrations can be quite high. In…

Zinc: The need for supplementation increases with age

As we arm ourselves for our battle with COVID-19, we must not forget zinc.  This is especially true for those over the age of 40, and the need increases with increasing age. According to the US Department of Agriculture, 73% of Americans are deficient in zinc, and deficiency is especially found in older people—even those who report taking zinc supplements.  Zinc is one of the foundation nutrients needed for building a strong immune system. Even a small deficiency can significantly impair immune function. Research over the past twenty years has shown that having adequate zinc reserves in cells inhibits replication of the coronavirus family of viruses, of which COVID-19 is a member. If a virus can’t replicate (reproduce itself), it can quickly and easily be eradicated by the immune system.  Zinc has also been shown to restore vigor to immune cells and to reduce excess inflammation. Controlling excess inflammation is extremely important in COVID-19 infections b…

Want a Healthy Future? Limit Your Cell Phone Use.

As we envision a healthy future for ourselves, our children, and our planet this month, let’s take a look at cell phones. Although more than 90% of the US population now owns one, cell phones have never been proven safe.  In fact, evidence for their ability to harm continues to accumulate. Although it’s too late to put the genie back in the bottle—we’ve become too dependent on our cell phones to give them up—both adults and especially children must limit cell phone use if we want a healthy future. Nutritionist Anne Louise Gittleman has pointed out that the kind of electromagnetic radiation cell phones emit causes subliminal stress that raises blood pressure and cortisol (a stress hormone) levels, alters blood sugar regulation, lowers thyroid hormone output and can interfere with getting a good night’s sleep. Cell phones also affect fertility and have been linked in children with behavioral disorders, learning difficulties and depression. Of particular concern have been…

Nature and Sleep

Spending time in the natural world can normalize our inner “body clock” also known as our circadian rhythm. Attuned to environmental cues like sunlight, temperature, and seasonal changes, our circadian rhythm regulates many physiological processes, including when to sleep and when to eat. Artificial light and electronic devices like computers and televisions give our bodies false cues that have nothing to do with the natural order of things and disrupt our circadian rhythm, which a growing body of research has linked to many mental and physical health problems. Sleep issues are an obvious casualty, as is false hunger leading to overweight and obesity. Circadian rhythm disruption has also been implicated in high blood pressure and heart disease, cognitive dysfunction, neurological problems like Parkinson’s disease, asthma, autoimmune illness, and mental health issues like depression, seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and bipolar disorder. A recent University of Colorado study w…

The Secret to Long Life: Probiotics

The road to health is paved with good intestines. – Unknown Living a long and healthy life depends on good digestion and a strong immune system. Both of these rely on helpful bacteria living in our intestines.  But various factors in modern life, including poor diet, toxins, stress, various medications and especially antibiotics, have diminished our good bug population. As a result, people living today are more vulnerable to infectious disease than ever before. While modern medicine seeks frantically for more and better vaccines and antibiotics to combat infectious disease epidemics, at Beyond Health we take a different approach: We combine the healthy lifestyle described in any of Raymond Francis’s books, a basic supplement program, and probiotics in food and supplements to rebuild and maintain strong immune systems capable of withstanding pathogenic assaults. Probiotics are special microbes that maintain and restore the body’s beneficial bacteria. All traditional soc…

Does Your Dog or Cat Need a Multi?

Does Your Dog or Cat Need a Multi?

Ask most veterinarians if your pet needs a multivitamin supplement, and you’re apt to get the standard response:  a “balanced diet” should be sufficient, and extra vitamins and minerals may even be harmful. It’s what they’re taught in veterinary school.  Pet food companies play a major role in what veterinary students learn, and these companies would like us to believe that they’re providing an adequate diet for today’s pets, and that anything you might do, from feeding table scraps to giving them un-prescribed supplements is endangering your pet’s health. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Although some are better than others, commercial pet foods are not adequate to support the health of your cat or dog. Like other processed foods, they’re nutritionally deficient and contain toxins. Vitamins and minerals are added in minimal amounts and in cheap forms that are ineffective at best and detrimental to health at worst. An optimal pet diet would be fresh, organic…

Don’t Pay Those Taxes!

Don’t Pay Those Taxes!

There are some taxes you have to pay, or risk going to jail! But others you can avoid, like the tax on your health every time you take an impure, poorly formulated supplement contaminated with solvent residues, artificial colors, and flavors, allergens and/or other potentially harmful chemicals. When shopping for supplements, people often don’t take this tax into account. If they did, they’d realize that the cheapest brands are usually the worst bargains. Not only do these brands provide little or no benefit, they tax your body with toxins that interfere with healthy body chemistry, often doing more harm than good. You may pay good money for something that detracts from rather than adding to your health. Supplement ingredients come in a wide range of purities. The purer the ingredient, the safer and more effective it will be. Although purer ingredients are almost always considerably more expensive, at Beyond Health we use only the purest ingredients available so you get maximum…

Live Longer and Better with Fish Oil

Fish oil can help you live a long life and, even better, a long and HEALTHY life.  Based on their analysis of 23 different studies involving more than a million participants, Chinese researchers recently concluded that Omega-3 fatty acids (such as are found in fish oil) reduced the risk of all-cause mortality by 7% for every 200 mg per day consumed.  But what is a long life worth if it’s not healthy?  The good news is that fish oil increases longevity because it makes us healthier.  Not only has fish oil been shown to help prevent all kinds of disease including cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders like diabetes, neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s, autoimmune disease, kidney and pancreas disorders, periodontal disease and cancer, it helps keep our telomeres long! What are telomeres?  Telomeres are caps at the ends of chromosomes found in each cell. Like the tips on the ends of shoestrings, they keep DNA strands toget…

Acidosis, the Neglected “Silent Killer”

Most of us know about “silent killers,” like high blood pressure, insulin resistance, and certain cancers that we can have for years without being aware of it.  But while conventional medicine has expensive tests for (and drugs to treat) these silent killers, a more fundamental silent killer, acidosis, is largely ignored.  What is acidosis?  It’s simply having too much acid in the trillions of body cells that make up our bodies. Most of our population in the US suffer from one degree or another of acidosis, usually unwittingly. And it’s killing us! pH is a measure along a continuum that runs from highly acidic to highly alkaline. The pH of our body fluids, especially the fluids in and around our cells, needs to be slightly alkaline in order for cells to function normally. Acidosis causes cells to malfunction, resulting in a host of other diseases and dysfunctions, including high blood pressure, insulin resistance and cancer. What other problems are a…

Sleep and Viral Infections

Although these stressful times can lead to sleepless nights, it’s important for all kinds of health reasons to make the effort to get enough good quality sleep.  But the most pertinent reason right now is that it helps prevent viral infections. But how much sleep do you need to avoid getting a cold or perhaps COVID-19? According to a 2015 study, the answer is more than 6 hours a night. While poor sleep and not getting enough sleep had been implicated before in increased susceptibility to infectious illness, prior studies relied on subjective measures—that is individuals’ own assessments of their experience.  This study was different in that it used an objective measure called wrist actigraphy to assess occurrences of the common cold after the researchers gave 164 healthy participants nasal drops containing the rhinovirus.  Like COVID-19, the common cold is a coronavirus that infects the respiratory system. The study’s conclusion? Less sleep increased ris…

Roberto Assagioli’s Exercise for Evoking Serenity

Roberto Assagioli MD was an Italian psychoanalysis who was a contemporary and student of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung.  But he was also deeply influenced by his mother, a serious student of Eastern religion.  He wound up combining Western science with Eastern spirituality in a new type of psychotherapy called psychosynthesis.  But more than his credentials, Roberto, as he was known, exhibited a calm sense of joyfulness and kindness that was quite independent of external events.  People reported feeling happy just being around him. So he can be considered an expert on the subject of serenity. In this anxious COVID-19 time, we might benefit from the following exercise he advocated for cultivating serenity, copied from his book, Psychosynthesis: EXERCISE FOR EVOKING SERENITY Assume a physical attitude of serenity: relax all muscular and nervous tension; breathe slowly and rhythmically; express serenity on your face with a smile.  (You can hel…

CNN Raises Concern Over Vitamin D Overdosing

Scientists from China to Great Britain are investigating the likelihood that vitamin D supplementation can dramatically reduce the severity of COVID-19 as well as its number of fatalities. We already know that adequate amounts of vitamin D are essential to immune function, and many Americans have begun proactively taking substantial doses.  In response, CNN is warning the public that taking too much of this essential nutrient can be dangerous.  But while the danger of getting too much vitamin D is negligible, the danger that we’re taking too little is huge! Too much of anything isn’t good for you—even water.  In a contest in which the contestants tried to drink as much water as they could as fast as they could, the “winner” reportedly died! In contrast, no one has ever died of a vitamin overdose, including vitamin D.  In enormous doses—many times more than the most enthusiastic vitamin D advocate would ever recommend—vitamin D can be harmful.  …
