Glucosamine Protects Your Heart as it Rebuilds Your Joints

Glucosamine is primarily known as supplement for supporting joint health; in Europe it’s even been approved as a drug for treating osteoarthritis. But researchers have found that people taking glucosamine supplements for their joints have been getting additional benefits they weren’t aware of—benefits to their hearts! Specifically a lower risk of cardiovascular disease events, coronary heart disease, stroke and death from heart disease.

Although glucosamine is found in high concentrations in joints, it is a naturally occurring molecule found in almost all body tissues. It’s the first biochemical component of connective tissue and plays an important role in the non-muscular component of blood vessels and also in heart valves. It’s also found in the mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. Throughout the body, glucosamine exerts antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Utilizing data from almost half a million participants in a large database in the United Kingdom who were followed for an average of seven years, researchers reported that compared to those people who took no glucosamine supplements, those who did take them had a 15% lower risk of total cardiovascular disease events, including cardiovascular disease death, coronary heart disease and stroke. This broke down into a 22% lower risk of cardiovascular death, an 18% lower risk of coronary heart disease, and a 9% lower risk of stroke.

Chondroitin, another major constituent of cartilage often used in supplements in conjunction with glucosamine, also has cardiovascular benefits. It is a major component of the elastic tissue that comprises the walls of the aorta and the larger arteries. High concentrations of chondroitin are found here in young people, where it acts as a protective “hormone-like substance” to prevent plaque deposits.

Levels of both chondroitin and glucosamine fall with age, and this decline may be a factor in many of the diseases associated with aging.

Beyond Health’s Joint Protection Formula provides generous amounts of glucosamine and chondroitin to support aging, injured, stressed and diseased joints and to provide additional benefits to the cardiovascular system and other body tissues.

Joint Protection Formula also includes MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) as a major ingredient. MSM is an organic form of sulfur, an essential nutrient for joint tissue that supports the stability of cartilage, tendons and ligaments and is often undersupplied by the modern diet. MSM reduces pain and inflammation and supports glucosamine and chondroitin in restoring joint health.

Like glucosamine and chondroitin, MSM also has beneficial “side effects” outside the joints. It plays an essential role in heavy metal detoxification, mitigates allergies, improves digestive ailments, alleviates emphysema and helps with diabetes.
