The Attack On Supplements

. . .Two new "junk science" studies provide ammunition The supplement industry has been under attack lately by the FDA and certain members of Congress acting in the interests of Big Pharma. Now two new studies have appeared that provide ammunition by seeming to corroborate the old chestnut that vitamin and mineral supplements are useless, if not downright dangerous, and that we are better off meeting our nutrient needs with a healthy diet. The first study found that older women living in Iowa who took dietary supplements died at slightly higher rates than women who did not take supplements. The second was terminated when researchers found that taking vitamin E was increasing the risk of developing prostate cancer. Before looking at these studies more closely, let's remember that as far back as 1998, the National Academy of Sciences issued a statement that most people can no longer get all the nutrients they need from diet alone, even if they eat an especially good diet with plenty of f…

Arthritis

Q: I purchased your book, “Never be sick again” and would like to implement your plan, but I don’t know where to begin.  I am 58 years old and have developed osteoarthritis in my hands.  I also have joint pain in my knees, diagnosed as patello femoral pain syndrome, but still have discomfort in my knees. Do you have a detailed eating plan or any other information that would be helpful? A: It’s is so good to hear that you have purchased Raymond’s book and that you wish to incorporate many of Raymond’s suggestions. As you know, we believe that there is only one disease – malfunctioning cells – and only two reasons cells malfunction – toxicity and nutrient deficiency.  Osteoporosis is like any other disease. It has two causes (toxicity and nutrient deficiency) and can be reversed with our approach.  The United States has one of the highest osteoporosis rates in the world. Americans suffer more than 1.5 million fract…

Not Feeling in the Pink? Try Zinc!

. . . building healthy immunity Building a healthy immune system, so that it's there when you need it, means fortifying yourself with all the basic vitamins and minerals every day. It's also important to keep inflammation under control. Chronic inflammation is a constant tax on the immune system, weakening immunity. It tends to increase with age; however it can be controlled with good diet, supplements and other healthy lifestyle choices. (See my article on Inflammation for how to reduce chronic inflammation.) Zinc is one of the foundation nutrients needed for building a strong immune system. Very often deficient in the elderly, it's been proven to reduce excess inflammation and to restore vigor to immune cells. It seems to condition immune cells so that they're ready to meet the challenge of flu. If you're unable to avoid a cold or the flu, extra zinc is helpful in reducing the severity and duration of symptoms. A recent review of 15 different studies using zinc for colds confirmed th…

Preventing Sports Injuries

. . .  An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure Several years ago I found myself consulting with quite a number of professional ballet dancers and athletes. Word had gotten out that those who followed my advice weren't getting the injuries or infections that are so common among people who push their physical limits daily. Dancers and athletes need the same nutrition most of us do, just more of it. Heavy exercise depletes the body of antioxidants and the amino acid glutamine; minerals get depleted in sweat. So I explained the one disease, two causes, six pathways (as described in my books) to them, and put them on a healthy, anti-inflammatory, plant-based diet and a high-quality supplement program including our multi, EFA Formula, Vitamin C, Bone Mineral Formula, Cell Repair Formula, and others. They considered me a miracle worker! Despite grueling workouts, they simply didn't get infections or injuries anymore! Their tissues became strong and resilient, and resistant to…

Radiation Hazard Update

. . .  Upping our need for antioxidantsWe now know that Fukushima is by far the worst nuclear accident in history. After Chernobyl, there was a related worldwide decline in health. How are we being affected by Fukushima? Although there have been no government warnings of excessive radiation levels, there is credible scientific evidence that there is no safe level of radiation.Suffice it to say that our health is under additional assault, and that it has never been more important to (1) make sure you are not deficient in iodine (most Americans are! call our office to find out how to test your iodine status) and (2) take antioxidant supplements. The more toxic our environment becomes, and this includes radiation, the more antioxidants we need to render the toxins harmless. For example, if you ingest more of the antioxidant vitamin C than your body needs, you get diarrhea. Someone who can normally take 6 grams a day may catch a cold and need 30, 40, even 50 grams a day before ge…
