Worried About Overindulging This Thanksgiving Holiday?
. . . beat food-guilt with these simple, proven tips for getting post-Thanksgiving relief
Holidays can be a curse when it comes to food. And Thanksgiving is especially tough as millions of Americans work through feelings of guilt and lack of self-control from eating too much food.
For some—overeating creates painful consequences. Like indigestion, gas, heartburn (acid reflux)…or the more severe gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
We’ve talked previously about the role of digestion in treating gastroesophageal reflux disease. And more importantly—if you already suffer its wrath—some natural ways to relieve GERD.
But for most people, Thanksgiving overindulgence—or any holiday for that matter—is a simple case of eating too much food. Still feeling bloated, uncomfortable, and guilty after employing these 13 ways to outsmart the holidays? Then we think you’ll get back on track much faster using these 7 additional tips for getting post-Thanksgiving relief from overeating.
1. Start by cutting yourself some slack. Remember, you’re not alone. So an occasional misstep is no reason to panic, but rather, a chance to recommit to eating healthy again. So if you’re feeling overstuffed, bloated, or even nauseated, try these simple eating solutions for post-Thanksgiving relief.
2. Choose natural relief over OTC or prescription meds. We said it many times before and it bears repeating, man-made medications are toxic to the body…are often ineffective…target symptoms instead of getting to the root of the problem…and cause side effects which are often worse than the original symptoms you wanted relief from. Choose safer, more effective options.
3. Don’t eat your next meal until you are hungry. When you finally do sit down at the table next, eat foods that are high in fiber. We’ve written previously how fiber-rich foods help managing weight by making you feel full and stabilizing blood sugar levels. Fruits, vegetables, legumes like beans, peas, and lentils, nuts and seeds, and other high-fiber foods help regulate your appetite to ensure you only eat when you are hungry.
4. Begin eating the right foods. Whether you’re considering how to prevent that terrible feeling of stuffing yourself, or are planning a follow-up meal to having already overindulged, below are some specific foods that can relieve or minimize that bloated feeling.
Cook your meals using a variety of herbs and spices. One study showed a blend of spices lowered triglyceride and insulin levels and increased antioxidant levels in test subjects. When presented with options, say ‘no’ to or choose fewer, smaller portions of highly processed foods including breads, dairy, and desserts. Instead, eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables—preferably raw organic—as these are loaded with health-promoting nutrients and free radical-fighting antioxidants.
5. Drink plenty water. Read here why pure, filtered water is one of our body’s most important needs. You can spruce it up a bit by adding a slice of lemon or cucumber, or some mint or ginger.
When it comes to digestion, water helps in three ways. First, it creates the necessary level of acidity in the stomach. Without high acidity (low pH), stomach contents—instead of emptying downward into the small intestine—are forced upward into the esophagus where it can cause painful heartburn, and even lead to GERD. Second, water helps produce the mucous lining that protects the delicate stomach tissue from the highly acidic contents. Without this lining, you run the risk of developing life-threatening stomach ulcers. And third, water allows the friendly bacteria to completely digest your food. Undigested food of the wrong pH in the large intestines causes constipation.
Additionally, almost all the tap water in the country is contaminated with toxic chemicals, including arsenic, cadmium, chromium, fluoride, nitrates, prescription drugs, tetrachloroethylene and other impurities, we highly recommend our Beyond Health reverse osmosis water purification system for an economical and practical clean water solution. This will ensure you get plenty of clean, safe water to help ease the bloated feeling you get from Thanksgiving overindulgence.
6. Wait a few hours before exercising rigorously or doing strenuous activity. It can take up to an hour average for a normal meal to digest in your stomach. But exercising too soon after eating too much can disrupt the digestion process. Though you may “feel” like punishing yourself soon after overeating simply out of guilt…or because you long to “burn it all off” now, you should wait at least 2 to 3 hours after overeating before exercising rigorously. Too much activity too quickly will leave you feeling more sluggish and further upset your stomach.
While yoga, dancing and other aerobics are excellent, we always recommend rebounding as a healthy way to exercise for most people. Never heard of it? Read about it here and see why rebounding is the most efficient form of exercise available for home use.
7. Take a high-quality multi-vitamin. Despite our natural tendency to overeat during the holiday season, chances are we still consume fewer nutrients than our body needs to maintain good health. In this previous article about nutrition, we tell a harrowing tale of malnutrition in America. Yet you can easily rectify this nutrient deficiency and defend against disease by taking a high-quality multi-vitamin.
You may have heard us rave about our Beyond Health multi-vitamin. And for good reason. Our formula provides the body the exact combination of vitamins and minerals in the forms it easily recognizes. This ensures the body can readily absorb and use them…and put them to work to help you get well and stay well after a holiday of excess.
Of course, prevention is always our best recommendation. Building good eating habits starts with listening to what our bodies are telling us. So choose nutrient-dense foods that your body responds well to…consume them in the exact amounts and forms it requires…and always strive to eliminate those food or food substances known to cause imbalance and disease.
