Your Immune System and Dealing with Viruses

It's not that easy for a virus to take hold in the body. Should it gain entry, it must first attach itself to a cell, then pass through the cell's outer membrane, and, once inside the cell, take over the cell's machinery to replicate itself.

The immune system can intervene and abort this hijacking of the cell at different points along the way, and a strong immune system can make short work of an intruding virus, nipping it in the bud before it can do any damage or even produce symptoms. Ultimately, it's the strength of your immune system that determines whether you get sick. If you do get sick, how sick you will get and how soon you will recover is the real question.

But we need to help our immune systems to function optimally. While other factors, such as avoiding toxins, eating a good diet and getting appropriate sleep and exercise are also important, there are four crucial supplements that we suggest focusing on at this time: Vitamin C, Vitamin D3, Quercetin Pro and Zinc.

How Your Immune System Fights Off Viruses

Our bodies and therefore our immune systems are constantly coming in contact with microorganisms. Starting from childhood, your immune system gradually builds strength through exposure to defend itself against bacteria, fungi and viruses, as well as the toxins they produce. As viruses adapt, so does your immune system through a combination of molecules, proteins and cells.

Its defense system includes:

  • Cytotoxic cells: Once infected with a virus, a cell's molecules have the ability to display these changes via select proteins at the surface containing fragments of the virus's generated proteins. As this occurs, T cells search for these infected cells. The cytotoxic T cell works to kill the infected cell and halt the spread of the virus.
  • Interferons: These are the proteins produced by the infected cells and ultimately signal that cell is infected and prevent the virus from replicating.
  • Antibodies: Antibodies act as a guard to prevent a virus's pathogens from infecting the cells and body.

Vitamins and Minerals for Strengthening Immunity

Fuel your health and your body's immunity by adding the following vitamins and minerals to your diet:

Vitamin C

Our immune cells can't function without vitamin C, and infections rapidly use it up, so it's crucial to take enough on a daily basis and to take more - sometimes much, much more - during an infection. Your body will let you know when you've taken too much - you'll exceed your "bowel tolerance" and get rumbling, gas and eventually diarrhea. See here for how to determine the right dosage for you.

We need vitamin C daily to strengthen our immunity: to prevent us from getting sick and to minimize an infection if we do get one.

When the body is under attack by a potent virus, vitamin C stores are rapidly depleted. If you've ever stopped a cold in its tracks with vitamin C by taking it "to bowel tolerance," you've experienced that for yourself. Under normal circumstances, you may reach "bowel tolerance" (the amount of vitamin C needed to stimulate a bowel evacuation) with 10 grams of vitamin C, but in fighting off an infection, because the infection is rapidly depleting your vitamin C stores, it can take 50 grams or more to reach that goal.

Vitamin D3

Having adequate levels of vitamin D is crucial to keeping immune defenses strong. Vitamin D stimulates immune cells to produce their own highly effective antibacterial and antiviral substances, including the cathelicidins, powerful chemicals that kill invading bacteria, fungi and viruses.

At the same time that it makes the immune system stronger, vitamin D regulates the immune system, making it smarter. While inflammation is a necessary component of an immune attack on a virus or other pathogen, inflammation can easily get out of hand, causing massive destruction and even death. Vitamin D calms down the immune system, moderating inflammation so that it doesn't become harmful.

You can't have an optimally functioning immune system without sufficient stores of vitamin D.

It's impossible to get levels like these following government recommendations. Most people need to take 5,000 IU per day or more to get their levels up and maintain them. During the summer months, if you can get 10-15 minutes of daily bright midday sun on your face and arms, you can make do with less.

Quercetin Pro

Quercetin has positive effects on the immune system. It often works with vitamin C, but it also has immune-boosting properties of its own, particularly as an anti-viral.

The way a virus spreads throughout the body is by entering (infecting) cells. Once it commandeers the cell, the virus "replicates" - that is, it multiplies itself - and sends new viruses out to infect more cells. By using zinc and quercetin together into our body cells, quercetin inhibits a virus' ability to get into our cells. If a virus does make it into a cell, zinc inhibits its replication. Therefore, it's important to take zinc and quercetin at the first sign of a viral infection.

Quercetin also reduces infected cells' resistance to treatment with antiviral medication. It inhibits the abnormal clotting that affects many COVID-19 patients, and as a powerful anti-inflammatory, it improves immune function by modulating inflammation.

Zinc

Zinc is one of the foundation nutrients needed for building a strong immune system. Even a small deficiency can significantly impair immune function. Research over the past 20 years has shown that having adequate zinc reserves in cells inhibits replication of the coronavirus family of viruses, of which COVID-19 is a member. If a virus can't replicate (reproduce itself), it can quickly and easily be eradicated by the immune system.

Zinc has also been shown to restore vigor to immune cells and to reduce excess inflammation. Controlling excess inflammation is extremely important, because it is excess inflammation in the lungs - the so-called "cytokine storm" - that causes death in severe cases.

Protect Your Body from Viruses

With great vitamins assisting in the fight against any virus comes great responsibility with your health.

One example is the coronavirus ripping through the world's population so ferociously and collectively making our immune competence weak.
