“Miracle Cure” for Depression Suppressed
This is a good news/bad news story. First the good news. As reported by investigative journalist Lynne McTaggart, in The Optimist, there is a doctor in England, originally from India, named Joseph Chandy, who has become renowned over the past forty years for miraculously curing hundreds of patients of their depression, as well as multiple sclerosis and chronic fatigue. In 2006, a BBC segment on him featured grateful patients whose lives had been turned around. Multiple sclerosis patients said they were able to get up out of the wheelchairs.
Dr. Chandy’s miraculous treatment? Vitamin B12 injections.
It seems that Dr. Chandy discovered early on one of the two causes of disease: nutrient deficiency.
As Raymond Francis wrote back in 2003:
Proper nutrition is the single most important factor in preventing and reversing depression. Consider that the inventor of the anti-anxiety drug Valium later discovered that B vitamins could produce exactly the same benefits as Valium, without side effects or addiction. Naturally, no leading medical journal would publish his findings since they were all profiting from advertising Valium. These findings were eventually published in an obscure foreign journal and remain unknown to most physicians.
Early in his career in India, Dr. Chandy observed that a senior doctor at the hospital where he worked had great success with many of his Hindu patients by giving them liver extract. Liver is a potent source of vitamin B12. Most of these patients were vegetarians, and vegetarians often become vitamin B12 deficient. In the vitamin B12-deficient Hindus, liver extract had a wonderful effect!
There are actually many different nutrient deficiencies that can lead to depression. All of the B vitamins are needed, along with vitamins C and D, omega 3 fatty acids, zinc and magnesium. (See Raymond’s article, The Depression Epidemic, for more.)
But here’s the bad news. Medical authorities in Great Britain have forbidden Dr. Chandry from continuing to use a treatment they consider “dangerous and unproven.” He is no longer allowed to diagnose or treat any condition with vitamin B12!
“It is a witch hunt,” he says. “They know I am right, but I am challenging the old thinking, the antiquated thinking.”
Fortunately, Dr. Chandry’s patients have organized politically, pressing Parliament to lift the ban. We wish them every success!
Meanwhile, if you suffer from depression, you may be glad to know you can get the same benefit you’d get from a B12 shot by simply taking one of Beyond Health’s tasty B12/Folate sublinguals. This formula combines the fast-acting form of B12, methylcobalamin, with long-lasting form, hydroxocobalamin, for maximum coverage. These sublinguals are absorbed directly through the mucous membranes of the mouth, which avoids absorption problems caused by low stomach acid, lack of intrinsic factor, leaky gut and gut inflammation.
Symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency range from the subtle to the disabling and include pain, numbness and tingling in the extremities, weakness and fatigue, imbalance, confusion, agitation, cognitive problems like memory loss and diminished mental acuity, dementia, insomnia, anxiety, depression, tremors and incontinence.
