Researchers followed more than 5,000 older adults for 18 years, and found that people who brushed their teeth less than once daily were up to 65% more apt to develop dementia than those who brushed three times daily. Although they weren’t sure why this was so, the researchers hypothesized that it was related to bacteria that accumulate on the teeth and gums.
