What is Cardiovascular Fitness?

What is Cardiovascular Fitness?

We all know that physical fitness is a good thing. Fitness is associated with heart and lung health, good blood sugar control, and a longer, more productive and enjoyable life. But what does it actually mean, and what do you have to do to get and stay fit? Although some definitions of fitness also include muscle strength, flexibility and body composition, fitness usually refers to cardiovascular fitness, or aerobic capacity—the ability of your heart, lungs and circulatory system to supply oxygen-rich blood to muscles and organs and remove metabolic waste products during exercise. You can assess your own aerobic capacity to some extent by how winded you get climbing stairs, lifting heavy packages or running for a bus. A more scientific home test is given here. You can also go to a clinic or health spa and have it measured by exercising as hard and long as you can on a treadmill while your heart rate and breathing capacity are measured. According to studies done at the Cooper Inst…

A Natural Approach to Alleviating Pain

Nov 3rd 2025

A Natural Approach to Alleviating Pain

Drugs reduce pain by poisoning enzymes or blocking pain receptors in the body, but they do nothing to address its cause(s). In fact, drugs usually make the underlying situation worse and create additional undesirable outcomes called “side effects.” A holistic approach uses natural pain suppressants with only beneficial effects on the body while it mobilizes and supports the body to heal itself of underlying causes. Structural issues should be treated with physical therapy and other types of bodywork. But tissue injury and inflammation causing pain are best addressed with healthy lifestyle, excellent overall nutrition, and specific nutrients that stimulate the body’s own repair mechanisms, reduce inflammation and build tissue integrity. Numerous studies show that vitamin C and the bioflavonoid quercetin do all three, creating a powerful intervention when used together. For maximum benefit, use our uniquely pure and potent vitamin C and our quercetin fortified with additional tiss…

Food Cravings – Why Do We Get Them?

Food Cravings – Why Do We Get Them?

Perhaps you’ve been pleased with how you’ve been eating. You’re following Raymond Francis’s book, Never Be Fat Again, eating a nutrient dense diet, taking good supplements, avoiding toxins and exercising. You’ve given up counting calories and diets that made you feel deprived, stressed and irritable, and you’re quite happy losing weight slowly but steadily.  You’re feeling like you’ve finally got a handle on this thing called food. Then it happens. At the Farmers Market you’re hungrier than you anticipated. A baker there sells organic, gluten-free, whole grain muffins.  Although carbohydrates are a problem area for you, you’ve had these particular muffins before without difficulty, so you eat one, and it hits the spot. Back home you get a distressing phone call from a friend that makes you feel anxious. Making lunch, you add wild rice to your chicken-vegetable soup.  You mean to add only half a cup, but end up adding a cup and a half. After finishing the soup you’…

The Sun, Vitamin D, Arthritis, and Happy Chimpanzees

Berkeley, California nutrition writer Clara Felix was one of the early trailblazers in using nutrition to fight disease. In the late 1990s, when vitamin D researchers discovered we needed much more vitamin D than had previously been thought, Clara upped her intake to 4,000 IU per day. After three months, an arthritic knee that had failed to improve with exemplary lifestyle, good supplements and avoidance of allergens alone became completely normal again! She was delighted to report being able to squat and do deep knee bends for the first time in eight years. It's not surprising.  Vitamin D is anti-inflammatory and also plays a role in the synthesis of synovial fluid, which lubricates the joints and prevents their wear and tear.   Studies have shown that having higher levels retards the deterioration of arthritic knee and hip joints. Clara also related this story about two chimps suffering from a "mysterious illness" who were…

First Aid for an Allergy Attack

Allergic reactions are very taxing to the body (see Raymond Francis’ article, “The Shocking Truth About Allergies”) and getting them under control by reducing inflammation and restoring systemic alkalinity as soon as you can will not only make you more comfortable, it will minimize the serious damage that each allergic reaction causes to your overall health. Although if you’re prone to having anaphylactic type allergic responses, you should have an EpiPen handy, for most allergy attacks—itchy, tearing eyes; sneezing; congestion and fatigue—natural substances can do the job. Vitamin C and quercetin (Cell Repair Quercetin or Cell Repair Formula) are a powerful combination for subduing inflammation. Take maximum doses to nip those allergic reactions in the bud. For taking vitamin C “to bowel tolerance” click here for instructions. Allergic reactions make the body acidic, exacerbating inflammation and damage to body tissues. Many biochemical processes are hampered in an acidic…

The Glutathione Depletion Crisis

The Glutathione Depletion Crisis

Chances are you’ve never even heard of the most critical molecule in your body: glutathione.  Identified back in 1888, it wasn’t until the mid 20 th century that scientists began to realize the full significance of this simple protein, made by most of our cells out of the amino acids cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine. However, more than 100,000 studies have now shown that glutathione is the most important molecule you need to optimize your health and prevent disease. The more glutathione you have in your body, the healthier you are and the longer you’re going to live. Virtually every chronic disease is characterized by glutathione depletion.  Young, energetic, healthy people have tons of it, while the hospitalized elderly have the least. Among glutathione’s critical roles in the body are:  1) Master Antioxidant in our body’s antioxidant system; 2) Chief detoxifier; 3) Regulator of cell synthesis, growth, maintenance and function; 4) Responsible…

New plant-derived burgers taste great, but are they good for us?

New plant-derived burgers taste great, but are they good for us?

New kinds of burgers made from plants, with the look, taste, smell and “mouth-feel” of real meat, are showing up in mainstream restaurants and grocery stores. They reportedly pass taste tests, even among die-hard carnivores, but are they healthy? Current levels of meat consumption are unhealthy as well as environmentally unsustainable. An international commission of leading scientists assembled by the prestigious medical journal, The Lancet, concluded that, “The current global food system is unsustainable and requires an agricultural revolution …” if we hope to feed all ten billion people projected to inhabit the earth by 2050.  According to the Commission, cutting back on red meat production is an essential part of this revolution.  A major consumer of land and water, and a major producer of greenhouse gas emissions, red meat, they say, should be limited to half an ounce per person per day, and other animal proteins should be reduced in our diets as well. Ente…

8 Ways Good Hydration Supports Immunity

Sometimes the simplest health practices are the most powerful.  Unfortunately we tend to forget or minimize them as we run after the latest supplement du jour.  But if you want strong immune protection against the COVID-19 virus, getting plenty of pure water is critical. Even a small amount of dehydration will negatively affect all the chemistry in your body. Yet studies show that most people are chronically dehydrated, especially over the age of fifty. In addition, we’re all under extra stress these days, and stress itself is dehydrating.  Here are eight ways staying well-hydrated supports your immune system: Almost all biochemical reactions involve water, and every cell depends upon water to wash away waste and toxins (including viruses) and to supply nutrients.  Your immune system relies on your bloodstream to transport oxygen and other nutrients and important communication signals to your organs. This transportation is less efficient when…

Vitamin E and Immunity

Vitamin E and Immunity

When you think about immune-building nutrients, vitamin E probably isn’t among the first that come to mind.  But it should be.  Vitamin E is one of the most effective nutrients known for supporting immune function—especially when it comes to fighting off viral infections, and even a marginal deficiency will throw a monkey wrench into your immune system’s response to a challenge. Laboratory, animal and human studies have shown that vitamin E has a variety of effects on immune cell production, differentiation, proliferation and activity; that vitamin E insufficiency diminishes these effects; and that supplementing with vitamin E at higher than government recommended levels enhances them. Yet as we confront the current viral pandemic, approximately 90% of the US population isn’t getting enough vitamin E from their diets to meet even minimal government standards. The average American diet supplies less than half the government’s Recommended Dietary Intake (RD…

Weleda Toothpaste

. . . 18 months of searching Mucus membranes in the mouth are even more permeable to toxins than skin, and most toothpastes are loaded with toxins. Fluoride is one -- the average tube of toothpaste contains enough fluoride to kill a small child! Fluoride leads to all kinds of disease, including cancer, brain damage, thyroid damage, and weakened bones and teeth. SLS and Triclosan are also found in most toothpaste. In one study, people with recurrent canker sores were given the same toothpaste for 3 months except that one contained SLS and the other didn't. At the end of the study, the SLS-free group had 64% fewer canker sores. It took a year and a half of searching before I found a brand of non-toxic toothpaste I could recommend! I looked at 200 or so different products in this process, and just couldn't find an American toothpaste I liked.  I finally found a Swiss brand -- Weleda, and we now sell three different toothpastes from this company. Weleda toothpastes work well to cl…

Blogcritics.org: Never Fear Cancer Again

"It would be a mistake to view Raymond Francis' Never Fear Cancer Again as a book solely about preventing cancer,” says Blogcritics.org. Here, Blogcritics writes an extremely informative book review and explains why Francis believes conventional medicine lacks success when treating cancer, yet this book is not solely about cancer. It is really about is getting healthy and staying healthy. “The simplicity of the Beyond Health model makes it very attractive, and certainly for those of us who are interested in staying well and avoiding diseases of all kinds, the advice in this book is easy to accept and very worthwhile.”…

A New Threat to Our Health

Here’s another important challenge to all of us who care about protecting health freedom in America.California legislators have proposed to eliminate parental involvement and consent in their adolescent children’s “choice” to accept dangerous vaccines.  If this measure passes in California, other states will be sure to follow. While some teens and tweens may be informed enough and strong enough to take a stand against peer pressure and school authorities pushing the vaccine of the moment, most minor children are not. That’s why this age group is under the legal age of consent and why parents are charged with the right and the responsibility of making certain decisions for them. This legislation seems to be a thinly veiled attempt to simply get more children vaccinated, overriding the wishes of many parents. As the Natural Solutions Foundation observes, if parents are deprived of the right to make health decisions for their minor children, “how long will it be before they – and you –…

Sign a Petition Demanding the CDC Tell the Truth about Vitamin D

The Alliance for Natural Health is challenging the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other government agencies to fulfill their obligation to the public to tell them the truth about the role vitamin D can play in preventing the flu and many other health problems.Over the past decade, a huge amount of research has shown that the role of vitamin D in health goes far beyond helping calcium to build bone (the only benefit government agencies acknowledge). In fact it’s hard to think of a chronic disease that isn’t powerfully affected by vitamin D. Your immune system cannot work without sufficient vitamin D, and some experts even consider winter flu a vitamin D deficiency disease. Yet the CDC continues to push flu shots, which are toxic to the human body, when non-toxic and even more effective natural alternatives are readily available.Because vitamin D impacts so many body functions, including immunity, at Beyond Health we strongly urge everyone to find out what their blo…

Do You Enjoy or Dread Exercise?

. . . genetics may have a lot to do with itRegular exercise usually increases vitality, but a lot of people just don’t have the energy or motivation to get started on an exercise program. Although different factors can be involved, such as low thyroid, inadequate nutrition, or trying to force yourself into a boring exercise routine, a new study has shown that genetics can encourage either a love of movement or for your favorite recliner. Fortunately, there are ways you can compensate for couch potato genes.Rats given running wheels usually put them to good use, but scientists observed that some rats choose to run more than others. They separated high voluntary exercising (HVE) rats from low voluntary exercisers (LVE), and bred them through ten generations to produce final generations of super-HVE and super-LVE rats. The primary differences found between the two groups had to do with genes that control the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain. The researchers believe that humans have…

Pass Up Those Plastic Bottles

. . .  and use our new Beyond Health Water Bottle! Not only is bottled water expensive, but its quality is often no better than tap water, and the plastic bottles it comes in are bad for your health and bad for the environment.Although some are worse than others, all plastics leach chemicals, and both the plastic bottles used for single-servings and the big 5-gallon polycarbonate water bottles leach hormone disruptors, like bisphenol-A (BPA).  Meanwhile, our environment is littered with billions of pounds of used plastic bottles, only 25% of which get recycled. Bottled water is also about 2,000 times more energy intensive to produce and distribute than tap water. The best approach is to treat your own water and use your own water bottles. Unfortunately it's been difficult to find a water bottle that doesn't also leach toxic chemicals. Until recently, the only bottles I've been able to recommend are glass bottles, which are heavy and inconvenient. However, I've now been ab…

Action Alert: Stop Genetically-Engineered Salmon

. . . yet another assault on our food systemOver the holidays, the Food and Drug Administration took a major step toward approving the first genetically-engineered (GE) fish, a salmon designed to over-produce growth hormone so that it becomes twice as big as normal salmon. This monstrosity has been nicknamed “frankenfish.” Only a massive protest from the public (that means us!) can block approval.Salmon used to be one of the healthiest foods on the planet, but not anymore. As a large fatty fish high on the food chain, salmon concentrates toxins which have proliferated in our oceans in its fatty tissues. While wild salmon is still an acceptable food in small quantities, farmed salmon is not. A 2004 study in the journal Science that analyzed salmon from all over the world found that farmed salmon contained substantially more toxins than wild-caught. These factory-farmed fish are fed a toxic diet and given growth hormones and antibiotics. Because they develop an unappetizing whitish/grey…

Beyond Health’s Wellness Kit #3— Detoxification Support

“Virtually every human being on earth can now be considered physiologically and biochemically polluted by human-made chemicals.” — Toxicologist James Siow, MD, PhD, of the Australian National Institute of Integrative Medicine. We’re all in toxic overload, and this is having a disastrous effect on our health! The body has wonderful detoxification systems, but they’re being overwhelmed by the unprecedented number of man-made chemicals they’re forced to deal with.  According to toxicologist James Siow , with our current exposure to toxins, the average individual can process and excrete only about 40-60% of the toxins they’re exposed to. The remainder bio-accumulates in tissues and organs, doing more and more damage over time. According to a 2016 report commissioned by the World Health Organization (WHO ), about one quarter of the global disease burden and more than one third of the burden among children is due to modifiable environmental factors.…

DNA, RNA and Aging

Want to age slower and live longer? Back in 1976, Dr. Benjamin S. Frank, a medical doctor and PhD molecular biologist, published a best-selling book, Dr. Frank’s No-Aging Diet.  This book proposed a revolutionary way of looking at aging. Dr. Frank was a miracle worker.  It was reported that he could take anyone over the age of fifty and, in 3-4 weeks, have them looking 10-15 years younger, with much more energy, endurance, and aerobic capacity.  Over twenty years of meticulous research and record-keeping, Dr. Frank documented achieving many health building and rejuvenating effects in his patients, including significant increases in energy and oxygenation, enhanced immunity and cognitive performance, improved capacity to tolerate low and high temperatures, smoother skin and thicker hair. Although his intent was to build general health rather than to treat specific diseases, his approach improved acne, ALS, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, emphysema, glaucoma and po…

Aspirin Alternatives for Thinning the Blood

Aspirin Alternatives for Thinning the Blood

As we age, our blood tends to become thicker, stickier and more viscous. When your blood is thick and flows more slowly, oxygen and other nutrients aren’t delivered as efficiently. But worse, viscous blood forms deadly clots more readily and has an abrasive quality that damages blood vessel linings, setting the stage for inflammation, plaque formation and eventual atherosclerosis. It also contributes to high blood pressure and is implicated in age-related cognitive decline and dementias like Alzheimer’s disease.  So keeping the blood thin (as in “blood thinners”) is a good idea, and to this end, doctors often recommend aspirin for its blood-thinning abilities. But aspirin has a big downside: by slowing tissue repair it increases the risk of internal bleeding—usually gastrointestinal bleeding, but also the kind of retinal bleeding or leaking that causes macular degeneration. Even the supposedly safer low doses have been found over time to do the same kind of se…
